Watch this short video to see how young and old residents of Gran Sous worked together to rebuild the first of seven homes destroyed by last fall's hurricanes. The first half of the video shows the destruction caused by the storms, and the second half shows the community's hard work. (Be sure to turn on the sound component of your computer.)

Roots of Development and the community of Gran Sous are hoping to promote and support a standard for all homes being rebuilt on La Gonave.

At just $3,000 per house, we are helping local Haitian construction workers find work, and the residents of the communities we work with, find the housing they deserve. Please think about donating to our hurricane relief initiative.

Home #1

BEFORE

A photo of what was left of Home #1 after hurricanes destroyed three of its four walls. On the ground to the left of the house you can see the rocks that used be the walls. The rags were put up by the family to try and temporarily keep sun and dust out of their living space.

AFTER

An outside shot of the home built for Elena and her family. The house was built using techniques and materials that will prevent the home from being damaged or destroyed by future hurricanes.

Elena and her family moved into the house at the end of March 2009. They now have a clean cement floor, strong walls, and a roof that will protect them from hazardous elements associated with poor housing conditions.

Elena, mother of eight, sits outside her new home with Chad Bissonnette, the director of Roots of Development, KODAG committee members, and several construction workers that helped build the house.
